Challenge Liturgy

The Challenge Program is a liturgy-centered program that invites disabled individuals, and their families, to participate in a monthly Divine Liturgy that is conducted in a supportive and accepting environment and in a manner that is appropriate to their needs. A Challenge Liturgy is held on the third Saturday of every month.

It is a dynamic, growing program presently serving about fifty families, many coming from neighboring Queens/Long Island parishes. Participation by members of other parishes, including other Orthodox jurisdictions, is encouraged and transportation is provided, when needed.

Social services programs and activities that promote socialization are an important part of the program. The Challenge Liturgy is followed by a reception that provides families an opportunity to socialize, develop friendships and exchange information. Members assist each other, serving as advocates, information gatherers and translators. Occasionally, speakers are invited to address the group on topics of mutual interest, such as guardianship, group residence placement, Medicare/Medicaid.

The success of the Program is due, in large measure, to the involvement and active support received from the Archangel Michael parish. A cadre of Archangel Michael parishioners volunteer their services at the monthly meetings and host the annual Spring Picnic and Christmas Party. Others donate food or financial support for these events. Groups such as the Joy/Hope, the Youth Choir and the Youth Folk Dance Group participate, also, and help make these gatherings the memorable and joyous events that they are.

The Challenge Liturgy Program is a unique ministry in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Our parish should be most proud for it is recognized and respected throughout the Archdiocese for this innovative program. May we continue to lead the way!
